Supun (Sam) Perera

Director, Principal Transportation Engineer

Qualifications:

BE Hons (Civil Engineering) with first class honours, University of Auckland

MS (Transportation Engineering), University of California at Berkeley

PhD (Transportation Networks), University of Sydney

Supun is an accomplished transportation engineer with over 12 years of professional experience in traffic engineering, transport planning, and public transport management. 

Having experience in both private consulting and state government roles, he has a thorough understanding across a broad cross-section of transport specialties including engineering, planning, modelling, design, and policy. Supun has been involved in projects ranging from transport impact studies for development applications to strategic transport planning projects, including precinct master planning, public transport network assessments and freeway interchange upgrades.

Supun completed his doctoral studies at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies at the University of Sydney. His research focussed on the development and application of network science-based models to understand and ultimately control the behaviour of complex systems, such as multimodal transportation, supply chain and logistics networks. He has also held short-term visiting postdoctoral fellowships at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge, investigating applications of network models to public transportation systems in the contexts of robustness and travel time reliability.

Supun has authored a wide range of journal publications and conference proceedings in the domain of transportation and network design. His Google Scholar profile can be accessed here.

Supun is currently involved in the development of the first national trip survey database for Australia, along with Transport and Main Roads QLD and the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies at the University of Sydney. This project seeks to centralise trip generation surveys across Australia to better understand the movement demands generated by various land uses.

Chris is a dedicated transport engineering professional with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Sydney. With over a decade of experience in traffic engineering and transport planning, focused largely within the local government sector, he has had the privilege of contributing to iconic Australian projects in both public and private domains.

Drawing on a diverse background, Chris adeptly navigates the intricacies of public and private sectors, striving to deliver results that meet and exceed expectations. His expertise encompasses transport modelling, local parking strategy, local area traffic management, and traffic facility design. Chris is equally dedicated to community engagement and education, recognising their vital role in successful project outcomes.

As a registered engineer with a wealth of knowledge and qualifications in the transport field, Chris is called upon as an expert witness in the NSW Land and Environment Court, providing critical insights that influence decisions.
